Group Reading In-class Activity

1. Reading the Poetry (10-15 minutes)
Read your assigned poem up to three times. Your first reading should be done without pen in hand and with no comments or notes written. For the next reading write down your questions and thoughts, what you like about the poem. Your final and third reading is for you to reflect on what you noticed during the second reading. Consider why these things were appealing or confused you.

When you have completed all three readings, do the following:

  • Write a brief account of what happened to you as a reader and to your understanding of of the poem over the course of your readings.
  • Write down any questions you have about the poem.
2. Group work (12-15 minutes)
Join into groups of three and share your account of what happened during your readings, your own experience as a reader and your understanding of the poem. See if your group can answer your questions or if they share the same experience.

3. Class discussion (10 minutes)
The class gathers again to consider and reflect on the activity and address any lingering questions.
